Sec 1 -- Integrated Humanities e-Learning -- Task 1 -- Contibutions of Dr Goh
Dr Goh Keng Swee was borned in Malaysia on 6th October 1918 and died on 14th MAy 2010.
Dr Goh became a civil servant in 1939 but was interrupted in 1941 due to the second world war.After the Japanese occupation, Dr Goh rejoined the civil service.He was promoted on a scholarship to London School Of Economics in London.
In 1949, Dr Goh founded the Malayan Forum which was a political discussion group comprising of Malayan and Singaporean students in London.The Malayan Forum met regularly to rally support the decolonisation of the independence for Malaya as well as SIngapore.It was through the Forum that Dr Goh met Toh Chin Chye as well as Lee Kuan Yew.
When Singapore first attained independence on 9 August 1965,Dr Goh became the first Minister of Defence.He saw an urgent need for a strong defence force.To quickly build up theSingapore Armed Forces,Dr Goh implemented compulsory national service for all male Singaporeans above 18 years old.
During his term as a Minister for Education,the importance of curriculum development in the education system prompted him to set up the Curriculum Development Institute(CDI).Due to high dropout rate, Dr Goh introduced streaming in 1980 so as to allow students to learn at their own pace within their own capabilities.Dr Goh also introduced religious education but it was later dropped from the school curriculum.
Dr Goh was also the chairman of the boardzoothold in a challenging market environment.Without his guidance, it might not be possible for NTUC Income to become what it is today.
